The San Juan Bonfires in Alicante 2026: Your Essential Guide

alicante-1

Alicante takes on a completely different vibe in June. The Hogueras de San Juan (the Bonfires of Saint John), the city’s biggest festival, fills the streets with a unique atmosphere where the Mediterranean breeze mixes with the scent of gunpowder. During these days, as you stroll through the centre, you’ll come across the main hogueras (monuments), set up right in the heart of the main streets.

At DoYouSpain, we want to give you the best tips to get to know the Alicante Hogueras and enjoy them to the fullest. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you organise your trip, understand the timings, and discover the local traditions. A great option is to hire a car in Alicante so you can get around the area comfortably and, what’s more, affordably.

2026 Calendar: Which are the Most Important Days?

The official calendar for the 2026 Hogueras runs from 20th to 24th June. You’ll see some events taking place before then, such as the ninot parade, but it’s during these five days that the city truly comes alive with the biggest events, including the famous flower ofrenda.

ThePlanta

The planta is the process of putting together the monuments that are eventually burnt. This officially happens on the night of 20th June, when artists and festival committees work through the night to piece together structures that weigh several tonnes. For the most impressive sights, look for the 'Special Category' monuments. In neighbourhoods like Carolinas Altas or Florida Portazgo, as well as at the Town Hall and the port, you’ll find the largest and most impressive bonfires. Take a stroll through these areas to see them up close before the jury picks the winner.

Mascletas: The Plaza de los Luceros

This is a massive favourite for everyone around here: every day at 2:00 pm, the Plaza de los Luceros fills with the sound of the mascletas. It’s one of the most anticipated parts of the festival in Alicante and a huge tradition in the region.

If it’s your first time, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Be on time: They start at 2:00 pm sharp, so don’t be late!
  • Get there early: To get a decent spot and really feel the atmosphere, we recommend getting there at least 45 minutes before it starts.

  • The weather: The midday sun in June can be pretty full on. Try to find some shade between the buildings, wear plenty of sunscreen, and bring a hat.

The Palmera and the Nit de la Crema

The festival wraps up at midnight on 24th June with the Palmera, a stunning firework display launched from Santa Barbara Castle. This is a sign for the crema (the burning of the monuments) to begin.

While the fires burn, it’s tradition for people to ask the firefighters to soak them with their hoses, shouting ' ¡Bombero, el agua! ' (Fireman, the water!). This is known as the banya and it’s the most fun part of the night, where everyone ends up drenched while celebrating the end of the party.

How to Experience the Festival like a Local: Traditions and Food

Apart from everything we've already mentioned, the city offers loads to do during these dates: lively streets, cultural activities, markets, and a great atmosphere. If you have a bit of spare time or decide to stay for a few extra days, there’s one visit you can’t miss: the Museu de Fogueres . This is where the winning ninot (figure) from each year is kept. It’s the perfect place to take a break, learn about the history of the festival, and see why the locals are so passionate about this tradition

Barracas and Racos: What are They?

A big part of the celebration happens where people gather to eat, dance, and have a good time. This is where the barracas and racos come in, and they are slightly different:

  • Barracas: These are usually private, organised by groups of neighbours or friends who get together.
  • Racos: These are open to everyone, with music and bars where you can grab a drink or try some typical local food.

Visiting a raco or a popular barraca is one of those experiences that lets you enjoy the festival just like a local.

What to Eat during San Juan: Coca amb Tonyina and Bacores

During the Hogueras, the local food is a massive part of the tradition. A total classic is the coca amb tonyina, a savoury tuna pastry with onions and pine nuts that is packed with flavour. You’ll also want to look out for bacores (figs), which are the perfect sweet treat to have on the side.

Tips for Your 2026 Visit

Enjoying Alicante during the Hogueras is much easier if you keep a few basic things in mind:

  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking between streets, squares, and the barracas, so a comfy pair of shoes makes all the difference.
  • Sun protection: As we’ve said, the midday sun in June is strong, so make sure you’ve got your sunscreen and a hat to stay comfortable while you’re out exploring.
  • Book your car: If you're planning to explore more of the province, it’s a good idea to book a hire car in advance with DoYouSpain, as they go quickly during peak season. To help plan your trip and see what’s nearby, check out our travel guide for Alicante and the surrounding area.

Getting Around the City Centre

The centre of Alicante becomes almost entirely pedestrianised during the week of San Juan, starting even a few days before the main events. Driving through the city centre isn’t the smartest idea because so many streets are closed off for the monuments and barracas. Your best bet is to leave your vehicle in a car park or near your accommodation and then explore the area on foot.

Hiring a Car is the Best Way to See Alicante

The hogueras are an incredible experience, and having your own car gives you the chance to see much more than just the city centre. With the freedom you get from DoYouSpain, you can easily balance the festival atmosphere with a trip to Cala del Moraig or a wander through the Elche Palm Grove. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the traditions while discovering the best spots on the coast at your own pace.
